Metformin and Vitamin B12

A new study shows that Metaformin may decrease the amount of the vitamin B12 in diabetic patients who have taken the drug for many years. B12 deficiency has been linked to dementia, decreased mental functioning, and nerve damage. Metaformin,the most widely prescribed diabetic drug, works by decreasing the amount of glucose taken in by the body from foods. Patients currently on Metaformin are encouraged to not stop taking the drug, but to ask their doctor about B12 levels and possible deficiency.
